This deadly poisonous fungus is also referred to as the "Death Cup" or "Destroying Angel".  The Death Cap is recognised by its white gills, a ring and a cup at the base of the stem, the latter usually hidden underground.

What makes the Death Cap so deadly is the fact that it gives no warning symptoms until the damage has been done and treatment may be too late.  One of the main indicators of Death Cap poisoning is a minimum delay of 6 hours before symptoms appear - it can take up to 48 hours.

This deadly fungus is very common throughout the sub-region - we have never had a report of a local death from consumption of these mushrooms, it appears that local tribes are well aware of the danger.
