Pel's Fishing Owl is
a rarely seen and strictly nocturnal species. These large birds are
habitat specific found only in thick riverine forests in proximity to
fishing pools. They are very selective about their nesting sites,
seeking out a hollowed broken bough of a tree in thick cover. They
can be found during the day and are generally given away by their
brick-red colour. The call of Pel's Fishing Owl is described as
sounding like "a lost soul falling down a bottomless pit"!
This is the second A2 sized sketch by Debbie Morrison for Steve Edwards. Debbie is better known for her bird paintings commissioned by Barclays Bank - these prints are still found in branches of the Bank throughout Zimbabwe.
