Leopard in a tree - Mana Pools, Zimbabwe

Zambezi logo

Although leopards (Panthera pardus) are well distributed in Mana Pools, these solitary and secretive cats are rarely seen.  Their presence is more often than not given away by a distinctive rasping call, not unlike a saw cutting through wood.

Leopards are expert climbers and generally use an out-of-reach fork in a tree for keeping kills from scavenging hyaenas, lion, wild dog and other marauders.

The Luangwa Valley in Zambia, particularly the Mfuwe Sector is considered to be one of the best locations in Africa for photographing leopard.
