Buffalo bull with cattle egret - Mana Pools

Zambezi logo

A rather typical buffalo (Syncerus caffer) pose - bar the cattle egret.  Cattle egrets are often associated with buffalo herds which disturb insects as they move through the bush and grass.

Solitary old males (referred to as "dagga boys") and small bachelor herds tend to lie up in dense cover and can be particularly cheeky.  They invariably run off grunting and snorting after a few moments of intense staring.  Wounded buffalo on the other hand are extremely dangerous and should never be approached - they don't do mock charges!

Mana Pools is home to large herds of buffalo which are invariably given close attention by lions.
