Nairobi - Kenya's capital and the primary international and regional hub.

Chyulu, Amboseli and Tsavo National Park - Amboseli is best known for unrivalled views of Mount Kilimanjaro (in Tanzania) and its large elephant population. Amboseli is home to over 1000 elephants, some of the biggest in Africa. The twin National Parks of Tsavo East and West together form one of Africa’s largest wilderness reserves, over 10 million acres. Framing the vast plains of Tsavo, and lying within view of majestic Mt Kilimanjaro, are the Taita and Chyulu Hills. The Chyulu hills are considered to be some of the youngest volcanic mountains in the world.

The Great Rift Valley - Kenya straddles the centre of the Great Rift Valley, the vast crevice that stretches from Jordan to Mozambique. From the North to the South of Kenya, the valley is lined with a series of freshwater and soda based volcanic lakes.

Safari ideas in the Great Rift Valley

The Governor's Safari: A 9 night, 10 day safari starting from Nairobi with 3 nights in the Rift Valley followed by 4 nights at Il Moran Camp in the Masai Mara ending with 2 nights on Mfangano Island on Lake Victoria.

Places to stay in Amboseli

  • Mt Kilimanjaro from AmboseliTortilis Camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and is situated just outside the park in one of Amboseli's few remaining areas of unspoilt woodland, with the majestic backdrop of snow-capped Kilimanjaro. The tents are all large and spacious, with en suite bathrooms complete with steaming hot showers and modern flush loos.
  • Porini - The Selenkay Conservancy lies a few miles north of Amboseli National Park and is an important dispersal area for wildlife migrating out of Amboseli. Selenkay Conservation Area is well off the beaten track and has not been visited by tourists until now. The number of tourist visitors staying at the Amboseli Porini Camp is limited to a maximum of eighteen per day to retain the wild and unspoilt nature of the area and to minimise the impact on the environment.
  • Ol Kanjau, meaning “place of the elephants”, is a small and traditional seasonal tented camp adjacent to Amboseli National Park. The camp is hosted by Mike and Judy Rainy, American naturalists and ecologists with a particular passion for elephants. The camp itself is a simple six tent affair where the focus is on getting close to elephants and Amboseli’s wildlife without crowds and minibuses.
  • At close quarters with 65 year old matriarch courtesy Mike Rainy of Ol KanjauOl Donyo Wuas Lodge nestles in the western foothills of the Chyulu range, overlooking Kilimanjaro. The lodge consists of 8 cottages all en suite with panoramic views of the plains and Kilimanjaro.

  • Finch Hatton's lies at the heart of Tsavo West National park, where Denys Finch Hatton lived and died. • Galdessa – Galdessa Main Camp is located on the southern bank of the Galana River, partially concealed by coppices of Doum Palms.
