Highlights

  • The sparsely populated wilderness of Meru National Park and the opportunity to see northern species of game such as reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. Also the excellent birding in Meru.
  • The vast array of adventure activities available in the Northern Frontier District.
  • The real contrast between game and terrain in Meru and Laikipia and the Masai Mara.

Elsa's Kopje, Meru National Park

  • Elsa’s Kopje is named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by George and Joy Adamson’s biographical film “Born Free”. It is currently the only fully operational lodge in Meru National Park.
  • view from Elsa's Kopje, MeruThe camp blends into the rocky crags of the “kopje” (small hill), built very near to the site of George Adamson’s original campsite.
  • The cottages are the ultimate rooms-with-a-view, uniquely designed and crafted, incorporating the natural features of the rocky hillside.
  • Elsa’s Private House is a spacious, stylish, exclusive hideaway set slightly apart from the main lodge with two bedrooms and its own private swimming pool.
  • A visit to the Meru rhino sanctuary is a highlight of a visit here, home to over 40 white and 20 black rhino.

Loisaba Lodge, LaikipiaLoisaba views across Laikipia

  • Loisaba sits on 61,000 acres of its own private game ranch in Laikipia, affording views of the escarpment and game waterhole and across 100kms of wilderness to Mount Kenya.
  • Ask us about a night at the Star Beds, each designed on a raised, handcrafted, wooden platform that is partially covered with a thatched roof. Homemade ‘Mukokoteni’ beds can either be wheeled onto the open deck for a night under the stars, or left under the shelter of the roof.
  • Alternatively you can choose to stay at Loisaba’s Private House or Private Cottage. [...we recommend the Loisaba Private Cottage for small groups of family and friends...]
  • Laikipia is an adventure playground. Activities include Loisaba’s own exclusive hot air balloon safaris, horse riding, camel riding, mountain biking, river rafting and fishing, quad biking, spa and massage.

Best time of the year

  • This safari is best planned during August and September - book in advance!
  • Kenya’s climate and altitude make it a great year round destination. Over most of the country there are two rainy seasons: the ‘Short’ rains which occur from late October through November and the ‘Long’ rains which occur from late March to early June. night fall at Elephant Pepper Camp
  • If you visit during a rainy period you’ll find that the rain usually falls in the late afternoon preceded by bright, sunny and fresh days.
    • July and August are the coolest months and are often overcast especially in the morning.
    • December to mid March is the warmest time of the year.
  • The migration is in the Masai Mara between July and October but space can be at a premium.
  • Cottars and Elephant Pepper Camp are closed throughout the months of April and May. Manda Bay closes from mid April to mid July.  [See additional information on the coastal seasons on Lamu]
