Highlights:
- This is a
deluxe safari which includes the best of the Zambezi Valley -
Zimbabwe-qualified Professional Guides are utilized for the full duration of
the safari.
- Matusadona is
recognized for its large population of lions; also one of the last wild
sanctuaries of the Black Rhino; elephant and hippo are seen in large
numbers; birding is excellent year round but best from September to March.
- Musango and
Maronga have consistently
received our top votes in Zimbabwe each year from 1999. The hosting,
guiding and location of this safari is excellent. This is in our opinion,
the best spot to see Black Rhino in southern Africa. Activities include
walking, game drives and boating on the Matusadona shoreline.
- Mana Pools
itself is has the largest concentration of wildlife on the Zambezi River;
elephant, hippo, and buffalo are abundant!
- Deluxe
canoeing takes place over a three night trail using a rolling tented camp on
the best stretch of the Zambezi River - the entire Mana Pools shoreline from
Ruckomechi down to Chikwenya.
- The Mana Pools
section is conducted by James and Janine Varden of Natureways.
- This safari is
run during the dry season from May to mid November each year and can be done
in "reverse" (Mana Pools first, Matusadona second) to suit
connections.
- Kariba is the
hub for this safari - one night is provided on a bed and breakfast
basis.
- The Matusadona transfer is via light aircraft to Rokari
or Bumi followed by a short boat transfer, the Mana Pools transfer is via
light aircraft to Nyamepi, followed by a short road transfer through the
park.
Best time of year:
- April, May and
June are relatively quiet, the peak is from July to September, October and
November are very hot but game viewing conditions are at their best.
- The rains
usually start in the middle of November and the roads in Mana Pools
deteriorate rapidly.
- This safari
only runs between April and early November.
Best access:
Kariba, Zimbabwe
is the start and end of this safari, connect from Victoria Falls or Harare
Tips and notes:
- Mana Pools and
Matusadona are arranged on an all-inclusive basis
- The Mana Pools
departures are fixed on Tuesdays and Saturdays - the Matusadona section can
be done before or after the Mana safari
- The 10 kg
baggage limit in soft bags is strictly enforced for the light aircraft
transfers, arrangements can be made to stow excess baggage safely in Kariba
- Dietary
preferences (e.g. vegetarian) must be specified in advance
- National Parks
charge per person rates of US$15 entry fee plus US$5 per night, payable in
cash on entry. These fees are not included in the safari rate and are
subject to change without notice.
