Sobek Canoe Safari...day one |
|
| 08h30:
Pick up from Kariba airport or hotels, drive to Zimbabwe border post to
exit Zimbabwe. Drive over dam wall and arrive at the Zambian border post,
complete customs and immigration with the assistance of the driver of the
vehicle (you should carry US$60.00 per person in case of Visa payments
etc. Regulations are constantly changing at the Zambian border post!). All
valuables other than your cameras, passports and the above cash, should be
left in Kariba, either at your hotel or previously arranged with our
office.
09h30: Leave the Zambian border post and proceed on tarred road to Chirundu (approximately 80kms). A few kilometres further one reaches the launching point. Please remember, there are no flush toilets along the way - you can use a toilet at the border post, or ask the driver to stop along the road before reaching the launching point. At the launching point you will meet your guide, have a safety talk and pack your baggage onto the back-up vehicle. The luggage proceeds to the campsite while you embark on the canoes and proceed down the river. The launching point is a communal area and although not pretty just a 100m away, the river returns to its natural state of beauty. You paddle for approximately an hour to get a feel of the canoes and then pull over for lunch, (a picnic on the side of the river bank). Discuss the finer points of canoeing and the route to be taken for the afternoon. 14h00: Back into the canoes and head towards Crocodile Camp (your first night camp), through channels by Kanyemba Island looking for birdlife and game along the way. 17h00: Arrive at Crocodile Camp which is a permanent tented camp with hot/cold water and flush toilets. The earth is swept around the tents and resembles an African village. There is a central sitenje (sitting area) where meals are taken under the stars. Your luggage will be waiting at the camp and snacks, drinks and dinner are served. |

| 06h30:

Please remember this is an active, living village - photographs will not be permitted and under no circumstances pay for anything. This will spoil the experience for yourselves and those to come after you. The guide will instruct on how to greet and thank the villagers. 14h00: Depart the village for Gurameno School 14h45: Arrive at the school and welcome by the Head teacher and children.
