Mana Pools Tented Camp, Zambezi River, Zimbabwe

Classic Africa Safaris

In addition to the 3-night/4-day Mukuyu Canoeing and Walking Trail, Classic Africa Safaris has an exclusive 8-bed Tented Camp within Mana Pools National Park. Situated on a private site on the banks of the Zambezi in an area known as Mucheni, the Tented Camp enjoys stunning views across the river to the Zambian escarpment beyond.

Being centrally located within the Park, guests have easy access to the main game-drive area as well as more remote walking locations and of course, the Zambezi River itself.

About the Tented Camp at Mucheni

The camp is seasonal in nature, open during our dry season from May to October [speak to Trish or Chris about "wet season safaris"], and is intended to give guests a truly traditional African safari in a "real" tented safari camp - no electricity, no plumbing, no concrete, brick or stone!  [see photos]

The entire camp construction is designed not to impact on its surroundings - in fact, the camp can be taken down and removed within 6 hours - leaving nothing behind to indicate that we had been there at all.

With spacious solar-lit walk-in tents, comfortable sprung beds, and en-suite facilities - you will find your every comfort has been provided for. (The Honeymoon Suite should be booked on special request.) The camp is complete with its own bush kitchen (always an attraction to the ladies and aspirant men-cooks), hot-water showers and flush toilets.

Mana Pools Tented Camp is hosted by a full time management team including a resident Professional Guide and full complement of support staff thus providing a level of personal attention found only in small, exclusive safari camps.

Mana Pools Tented Camp appeals to those who are looking for a true African bush experience. Here you can relax and enjoy the many comforts provided in camp or go out to explore this World Heritage area in more detail.

Activities from Mana Pools Tented Camp

Activities include guided walks with a licensed Professional Guide, game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles, and canoeing the Zambezi river. They are essentially similar to those offered on the Mukuyu Trail with less emphasis on canoeing and a greater opportunity to discover the more remote areas of the park or spend more time exploring on foot and by vehicle. The guide carries a weapon and radio at all times.Walking trail from camp with a Professional Guide

We recommend the Mucheni camp as a two night extension either before or after the Mukuyu Trail - on its own, we recommend a minimum of three nights in camp.

Mana Pools offers exceptional opportunities for close encounters with Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Wild Dog, Leopard and many of the larger antelope species - there is no such thing as a typical day. Early mornings are the best time to set out from camp on foot, when the animal spoor is still fresh from the activities of the night before. Game activity, weather conditions and the enthusiasm or special interests of our guests generally determine afternoon activities which are often spent canoeing on the river or taking game-drives to the more remote and less frequented parts of the Park.

Meal-wise, breakfasts are generally taken in camp, with lunch being a cold buffet followed by an afternoon siesta, dinners are served out under the stars, with waiters in attendance and a warming campfire nearby.

Special notes on the Mana Pools Tented Camp

Lighting: There is no electricity in camp. Battery operated lighting is available in your tent and en-suite. Although torches are provided you should be sure to bring your own. Each evening hurricane lamps are lit and strategically placed around camp.

Laundry: Weather permitting a laundry service is available each day.

Tent Service: Your tent will be cleaned each day, and your beds turned down and water placed by your bed each night. You will find a wash stand outside your tent. Hot water is delivered to your tent each morning for washing and shaving. Cold water to clean your teeth or wash your hands is available in a jug placed under the wash basin.
