"Livingstone's footsteps"

Scheduled safari in Botswana

The various habitats of the northern Kalahari and the lush Okavango Delta form the most dissimilar combination of habitats on earth and thus provide an exceptional variety of wildlife and ecology.

Through this amazing and remote landscape we have arranged a private game safari during Botswana's winter to early summer, including two days on the edge of the Okavango Delta, one of Africa's great experiences.

Chobe

The flood plains of the Chobe River are the setting for some of the largest concentrations of elephant in Africa seen on our early morning game drives, together with the bird life of the river, the hippo, crocodile and aquatic game. We travel through some of the most remote parts of southern Africa, past Tswana villages in the bush, to the Savuti Channel, an old watercourse of the Linyanti River.

Savuti

This is very much Livingstone's country, as we stay at Savuti, a marsh in the dry Kalahari. Game abounds and it is one of the best locations in southern Africa for the big cats, especially prides of lion. We drive from Savuti through the Kalahari to the edge of the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve.

Okavango Delta and Moremi

Here our tented safari camp will have been relocated in a remote part of the reserve, a combination of expanses of water and mopane woodland. Tsessebe, red lechwe and a variety of forest mammals are found here. Lion are commonly seen, as are forest birds and small mammals like the pygmy mongoose and tree squirrel. From Xakanaxa we are able to penetrate deep into the waterways of the Okavango, game viewing the aquatic animals like lechwe and water buck, as well as buffalo, elephant and a mass of water birds. There are also walking trips on the islands to see the animals and birds especially the rare Pel's Fishing owl.

Typical safari itinerary

  • Day 1. Flight from country of departure to Victoria Falls.
  • Day 2. Mid-day arrival in Victoria Falls and transfer to the Ilala Lodge hotel overlooking the Zambezi. Sunset cruise on the Zambezi and visit the Falls.
  • Days 3-5. Driving through the Botswana border, we camp beside the Chobe River at Serondella. The riverine habitat is home to large herds of elephant, buffalo, lechwe, puku, giraffe, leopard and cheetah. Birds include fish eagle, goliath heron, stilts and other waders.
  • Days 6-8. After a drive through the remote parts of the Chobe catchment, with Tswana villages, we camp at the Savuti Channel, an open marsh with cheetah, lion, spotted hyena, wildebeest, and tsessebe. Depending on the game we will also include Tchinga and Lake Liambezi, and Bushmen paintings at Ngocha Hills.
  • Days 9-11. Through the forest reserve we reach our camp at Moremi, a mosaic of mopane woodland and water glade. Waterbuck, roan and sable antelope, kudu, leopard, Cape hunting dog, jackal, wattled crane, bataleur eagles and Arnot's chat are seen.
  • Days 12-13. In Xakanaxa, part of the Moremi Reserve. The area is one of mopane forest and water glades with elephant, buffalo, zebra, tsessebe etc. Our own boat allows visits into the heart of the Delta, with island walks, lagoon cruises for bird watching including jacanas, nesting marabou and storks, gallinules etc.
  • Day 14. After an early breakfast, take a private flight with remarkable views over the Okavango Delta to Maun. At Maun Airport fly to Johannesburg, Harare or Windhoek to connect with flight to country of departure.
  • Day 15. Arrive at your final destination.

A Typical Day on safari...

All safaris are wholly dedicated to game viewing and bird watching. The usual pace of the day is to rise at dawn, with hot water to wash. Tea, coffee and a simple snack are available before leaving for a game drive until about 11.00, returning to the camp for an extensive brunch. After a siesta until about 3.30 in the afternoon, tea and cake are served before the evening game drive until dark.
